Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic, systemic disease characterized by inflammatory synovitis of unknown etiology. Patients may present with small joints, multiple joints, symmetrical swelling and pain, morning stiffness, and recovery after exercise. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis should be treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, immunosuppressants, and glucocorticoids in the acute phase to relieve symptoms and control the progression of the disease. Rheumatoid arthritis will show joint deformity or even joint loss of function as the disease progresses, and joint replacement surgery will be performed if necessary.
