Indirect inguinal hernia occurs mostly in adolescents and children. It protrudes through the inguinal region and into the scrotum. It is prone to incarceration. Direct hernia occurs mostly in the elderly. The hernia protrudes from the inguinal triangle and the spermatic cord is located in front of the hernia sac. Direct inguinal hernia is not prone to incarceration.
